Welcome to Halu-Halo's new series: Author-ish. Halu-halo, as a blog, has always focused on inspiration, and our interviews will ask authors about theirs. Author-ish is named as such because these interviews won't be about the craft of writing, but all the feelings behind it.
FEATURED AUTHOR :: ERIN FLETCHER
Erin is a young adult author from North Carolina. She is a morning person who does most of her writing before sunrise, while drinking excessive quantities of coffee. She believes flip-flops qualify as year-round footwear, and would spend every day at the beach if she could. She has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, which is almost never useful when writing books. WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME is her first novel.
WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME -
Entangled Publishing, (e-book): January 7, 2014, (paperback): November 25, 2014 - CONGRATULATIONS!
When Hanley Helton discovers a boy living in her garage, she knows she should kick him out. But Nate is too charming to be dangerous. He just needs a place to get away, which Hanley understands. Her own escape methods—vodka, black hair dye, and pretending the past didn't happen—are more traditional, but who is she to judge?
Nate doesn't tell her why he's in her garage, and she doesn't tell him what she's running from. Soon, Hanley’s trading her late-night escapades for all-night conversations and stolen kisses. But when Nate's recognized as the missing teen from the news, Hanley isn't sure which is worse: that she's harboring a fugitive, or that she's in love with one.
Tif (haluhalo) - The best part about these interviews is getting to feature such fanstastic people. Today, we have Erin Fletcher, whose debut, WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME, has turned one! Even greater news--it was released to paperback in November.
Welcome, Erin! I loved WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME. It's a book that had a great balance of family and romance along with humor and some serious stuff. Tell us, what was you inspiratiion for this book??
Erin Fletcher - While visiting my parents, I walked into their garage and sneezed. I thought about how creepy it would be if someone in the garage (that I thought was empty) said, “Bless you.” Then I wondered if the person who said that could be living in the garage, why he might be living there, and how his life might intertwine with the girl who lives in the home. So the book literally started with a sneeze!
Tif : Aack! That would freak me out! Seriously though, we writers come up with great ideas at the oddest of times. Most often, we forget as soon as we walk to the next room. How did you keep this inspiration forefront?
Erin : I focused on keeping the mystery of the situation alive. I also spent some time in my parents’ garage, imagining what Nate’s life there would be like.
Tif : I love that commitment! As writers, we have to get to know character/situations. When do you do your best work? Do you have a routine?
Erin : Though I’m not quite as consistent as you, Tif, I do my best work in the morning, usually during 5 a.m. Writer’s Club (with plenty of coffee, of course!). I have a full-time job and a couple of part-time jobs, so I’m usually too exhausted to do anything creative in the evenings. First thing in the morning is when I’m sharp and focused.
Tif : Um, if you call consistent sliding into the chair and attempting to wake! *winks*. But yes, I definitely am with you that the A.M is prime time for focus. You are a rightfully busy lady! What fuels your spirit? What fills your tank?
Erin : Reading great books. Reading a story that makes me laugh or cry, or discovering a line so beautiful I have to jot it onto a sticky note inspires me to attempt to write something of that caliber.
Tif : Yes, yes, yes! This is why we get along. Reading is really at the heart of our business. Reading is inspiration in itself. Sometimes, in my case, reading, however, becomes a distraction. What are your biggest distractions and how do you stay focused?
Erin : Since I write in the morning, my biggest distraction is probably the snooze button! I’m seriously considering investing in one of those alarm clocks that runs away from you, so you have to get out of bed and find it to turn it off!
Tif : There is a reason why I have two phones and an iPod strategically placed around my bedroom.
Give me five words that describe WHERE YOU’LL FIND ME.
Erin : Mysterious, Charming, Intense, Unpredictable, Emotional
Tif : Spot on! I love Charming! Oh, Nate!
What do you love most about this book?
Erin : I love that it reminds readers that things aren’t always what they seem, and people can change.
Tif : Exactly. It reminded me that everyone has their own special story. So, be kind!
Now, for the hard questions. Are you outspoken or pretty quiet?
Erin : I’m pretty quiet until I get to know people. But once you know me, good luck getting me to shut up!
Tif : HA! This leads to ---> Are you a party animal or hang-around mellow?
Erin : Definitely mellow. If you read WYFM, I’m much more like Heather than Hanley.
Tif : Finally, do you love to give gifts, or love to get gifts?
Erin : Love to give gifts! I spend a lot of time thinking about what to give people. Then I spend time finding the best deals so I can give the most within my budget. It’s so much fun to see someone open a gift and know that you gave the exact right thing!
Well, Erin, you have been a gift to us today. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview. Happy Book-versary!
